The Versatility of Ozone - Odour and Virus Control in Hospitality

First impressions matter in hospitality, hotels and conference centres.

From the moment they enter, guests expect fresh, hygienic environments.

Uniquely in hospitality, the impact of a first impression is a repeating phenomenon.  It happens at checking in, then again in the conference room, or the changing rooms in the leisure facilities and again the first visit to the toilets and, of course, on opening the door to their room. Yet, odours from stale food, smoking, vomit, cannabis, spilt alcohol, and other sources can linger. As soon as your guest smells them, all the good impressions go out of the window. You end up with reviews such as (and all these are genuine):

“The room was

clean but unfortunately the corridor reeked of weed on both nights. Staff sprayed deodoriser but the smell came back.”

(hotel in Manchester)

“The room was fine, but the bathroom had a constant sewage smell. Staff said it was an issue with the plumbing and offered air freshener, which only masked the odour for a short while.”

(Hotel in London)

“Toilets near the conference suite had a strong stale urine smell throughout the day. Staff sprayed something, but by lunch it was back again.”

(Conference Centre Birmingham)

Sadly, all those visitors will focus on is the smell. Great location, great service, great accommodation, great facilities, all now irrelevant because the last occupant smoked weed out of the window, or the toilet smell overflowed into a corridor.

That doesn’t need to be the case!

Ozone treatment offers a scientifically proven solution that goes beyond simply masking smells. It eliminates odours at the molecular level and neutralises bacteria and viruses, leaving indoor environments genuinely fresh and safe.

Why Ozone Beats Traditional Odour Masking  Sprays

Most air fresheners and sprays only mask unpleasant smells. They just temporarily overlay odours with a very strong, thick, chemical-smelling fragrance.  However, they don’t tackle the root cause. Odours don’t go away if you spray chemicals around. The particles and compounds that caused the smell in the first place are still there. This means once the scent from the spray settles as a chemical layer on the surfaces in the room, the unpleasant odour returns. Also, even though your team has cleaned the original source of the smell, it could be hiding in the soft furnishings and even the walls themselves.

Ozone, on the other hand, destroys the source of the odour. It works by oxidising and breaking down organic compounds that create bad smells, and it usually destroys viruses or bacteria at the same time. Not only that, but ozone is a naturally occurring gas (O₃), so it reaches places that sprays and surface cleaners can’t. Airborne at first, the ozone then settles around the room, deodorising (and even sanitising) areas such as carpets, curtains, soft furnishings, and ventilation systems. It then attracts and bonds with odours before returning to oxygen, destroying the odour in the process.

This makes ozone one of the most effective and versatile solutions for managing persistent odours and hygiene concerns across hospitality environments.

  • Key Point: Ozone eliminates odours and viruses at the source, then returns to clean, fresh air. It is a clean-up, not a cover-up.

Tackling Large Spaces with the Eclipse Pro Max

For larger hospitality spaces such as hotel bars and theatres, conference halls, function rooms, cinemas or most open-plan lounges, the Eclipse Pro Max is the ideal solution. It delivers powerful ozone generation capable of neutralising even the most stubborn odours after busy events or parties. During party season, it is a must-have if you want to turn a room for the next event as fast as possible. Clean as normal, and the Eclipse Pro Max will remove the odours left behind. That usually means no need for an expensive deep clean and a room back in service within an hour or so.

A regular post-conference scenario:

A larger room is filled with lingering smells of food, spilt wine, body odours, and stale air. Instead of cleaning and then airing the room for hours or relying on sprays that simply won’t be enough, clean the room as usual after guests leave, then use the Eclipse Pro Max. Within a controlled cycle, ozone circulates through the space, destroying odour molecules, and many airborne viruses, before safely reverting to oxygen.

When the system completes its cycle (often in less than an hour), staff return to a fresh, sanitised environment, and you are ready for the next event. As a side benefit, the ozone will have also reduced the potential for norovirus or civid transmission on surfaces.

  • Key Point: The Eclipse Pro Max refreshes large hospitality spaces quickly and effectively, restoring them to guest-ready condition with minimal downtime.

The Eclipse Pro – Perfect for Bedrooms and Smaller Rooms

Image of Ozofresh Eclipse Pro Ozone GeneratorHotel bedrooms present unique challenges. Odours from smoking, weed, food, or alcohol spills can linger in fabrics, carpets, and ventilation systems. These smells are difficult to remove with cleaning alone, particularly when there’s limited time between guest check-outs and arrivals.

The Eclipse Pro offers the same professional ozone treatment technology as the Pro Max, but it is intended for smaller spaces. It’s ideal for bedrooms, smaller meeting rooms, and suites. After routine cleaning, staff can activate the unit to neutralise remaining odours and sanitise the air.

Within a short cycle, the room feels as if it has never been occupied, and no trace of smoking, cooking, or body odour remains. Better still, not only do you avoid a terrible review, but you probably also do so for less than £3 a room based on usual usage of the Eclipse Pro over its 2-year warranty period.

  • Key Point: The Eclipse Pro ensures bedrooms and smaller rooms stay fresh, hygienic, and guest-ready in less time.

The Aura – Managing Odours in Corridors, Changing Rooms, and Toilets

These spaces often accumulate body odour, cleaning chemical residue (which produces that distinctive ‘toilet’ smell), and damp air, making them challenging to maintain with ventilation alone.

The Ozofresh Aura provides continuous, low-level ozone treatment suitable for these areas. Its compact, wall-mounted design and controlled ozone output make it safe for occupied spaces while maintaining a consistently fresh environment.

Whether in a leisure club changing room or a busy hotel corridor, the Aura keeps the air clean, reducing bacterial build-up and controlling persistent odours before they become noticeable.

  • Key Point: The Aura delivers continuous, low-level ozone treatment to maintain freshness and hygiene in high-traffic, shared areas.

The Ozofresh Plug-in – Fast Refresh Between Guests

Image of Ozofresh Plugin Ozone GeneratorFor lighter habitation odours, such as lingering body sprays and scents, mild food smells, and particularly the stale air you get from an unoccupied room, the Ozofresh Plug-in is the perfect solution.

It’s compact, simple to use, and ideal for quick turnarounds between guests.

Staff can plug the unit in after standard cleaning to neutralise odours. Within a short period, the room smells fresh and inviting, making it an excellent option for housekeeping teams managing back-to-back check-ins. Plug it in while the cleaning is completed, then move on to the next room, or leave it running in occupied rooms. Where the more powerful Eclipse Pro range machines require an empty room, the PlugIn (and the Aura), both meet HSE standards, are completely safe for inhabited areas and can run 24/7 if needs be.

  • Key Point: The Ozofresh Plug-in provides quick, simple ozone treatment between guests, enhancing room freshness without disrupting operations.
